// History of the Vieux Carré
The Vieux Carré was created in the 1930s at the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans, likely by head bartender Walter Bergeron. It is named after the city’s French Quarter and reflects New Orleans’ layered cultural history by combining American rye whiskey, French cognac, Italian vermouth, and Benedictine. Unlike many classic cocktails, it was designed from the start to be complex and spirit-forward, making it a drink meant for slow sipping rather than trends and one that still feels modern nearly a century later.
