// History of the Old Fashioned
The Old Fashioned is often considered the original cocktail. Its roots go back to 1806, when the word “cocktail” was first defined as a mix of spirits, sugar, water, and bitters. By the mid-1800s, bartenders began adding liqueurs and garnishes to whiskey drinks, but traditionalists pushed back—asking for a drink made “the old-fashioned way.”

The first printed recipe for the Old Fashioned appeared in the late 1880s, with whiskey, sugar, bitters, and a twist of citrus. Louisville, Kentucky, claims to be its birthplace, where the Pendennis Club supposedly created the drink before it spread to New York.

Over the decades, fruit and soda crept into the recipe, but the modern revival of classic cocktails in the 2000s brought the Old Fashioned back to its minimalist roots—spirit-forward, balanced, and timeless.
